In 2006, the French State handed responsibility to BRGM for the technical management of surveillance and safety work in former mining sites and for the prevention of mine-related risks and pollution.

BRGM is responsible for managing safety engineering work as the delegated project manager, for surveillance of mine facilities and for the post-mine information system.
